Foldable form-retaining holder and method for folding a form-retaining holder
The present invention relates to a foldable form-retaining holder for holding a food, such as a pizza box, as well as a rash for apparent use in such a holder. The present invention further relates to a method for folding a foldable form-retaining container according to the present invention.
Form-retaining containers, in particular pizza boxes, are often made from hard-to-fold corrugated cardboard. Form-retaining containers are frequently used for keeping already heated food warm and / or for hygienically transporting the food, such as pizzas. The construction of such a holder is therefore such that the unexpected tearing of the holder is reduced to a minimum.
After the food has been removed from the form-retaining container and the container can no longer be considered functional or usable, the user must further process the container into waste. Since the container will often contain food scraps and the used material of the container, such as corrugated cardboard, will often absorb food scraps such as fat, the container is not suitable for depositing with waste paper waste. Therefore, the holder will have to be deposited in a standard trash bin in order to be able to dispose of the holder via the household, garden and kitchen waste.
Depositing the now usual containers in the trash bin of the average consumer is not a simple task. After all, the dimensions of the holder are such that the holder cannot simply be deposited in the trash can. In fact, the shape and robust construction of the containers that are often used in practice are incompatible with the garbage bags, as a result of which unwanted pointed shapes can occur in the garbage bag, with the result that the garbage bag will tear undesirably.
In order to prevent the above drawbacks, ie to provide a container which can be reduced in a simple manner in order to make it possible to deposit it in the waste bin, the present invention provides for this purpose a foldable form-retaining container for holding a food, the container having a base surface and upright sides comprising an upper edge and comprising an upper surface opposite the base surface, which upper surface is connected to the upper edge of at least one of the upright sides and wherein a first side of the holder and a second side of the holder opposite the first side holder each be provided with a weakening extending in the longitudinal direction of the relevant side for being able to at least fold the relevant side. The holder according to the present invention differs in that a first end of the weakening connects to a tear line arranged in the relevant side, which tear line is arranged substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the relevant side and a second end of the weakening at least connects to an imaginary square folding surface, which folding surface is enclosed by the top edge of the relevant side, a raised edge of the relevant side and the base surface adjacent to the relevant side. The folding surface is further provided with a diagonal folding line which extends from a first corner point of the folding surface to a second corner point of the folding surface and it is noted that the second side is mirrored with respect to the first side in order to provide a symmetrical weakening to prevent folding lines arranged in the two sides will oppose each other.
It has been found that the above construction results in an easy to fold container. By providing a weakening in both sides of the holder, it is easier for the user to move the base surface, the bottom, and the top surface, often the lid, towards each other, after the two respective sides have been pressed. The resulting flatter construction of the holder can then be further folded to reduce the holder.
Not only does the above construction result in a container that is easy to fold, any residual food residues in the container do not have the option of leaving the container during the folding process. The base surface, the upstanding sides and the top surface remain intact during the folding process, thus guaranteeing the holder to retain food.
The weakening in both sides of the holder can be applied in various ways. However, it is preferred that the weakening comprises a perforation line or rib line. The weakening further preferably comprises a perforation line, the perforation being 6 millimeters to 6 millimeters. It has been found that with such a perforation line the form-retaining material folds or bends more easily without tearing the material.
The tear line preferably comprises a perforation line or rib line. The tear line further preferably comprises a perforation line, the perforation being 2 millimeters to 2 millimeters. It has been found that with such a perforation line the form-retaining material tears more easily.
Similarly, the diagonal folding line includes a perforation line or rib line. The diagonal folding line may, contrary to the name, also tear during the folding process. Tearing the diagonal folding line can still ensure that food scraps are retained by the holder during the folding process. Therefore, a perforation line can be chosen where the perforation is 2-6 millimeters to 2-6 millimeters.
In an embodiment according to the present invention, the second end of the weakening connects to the diagonal folding line arranged in the folding surface. The weakening hereby intersects an (imaginary) side of the imaginary square to connect to the diagonal folding line arranged in the folding surface.
However, the folding surface is more preferably provided with a tear line arranged between the second end of the weakening and an end of the diagonal folding line that is closest to the second end of the weakening. Such a construction appears to result in a more robust way of folding the holder. The second end of the weakening is preferably positioned such that the tear line arranged in the folding surface can be arranged substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the relevant side. It has also been found that instead of such a tear line the folding surface is provided with a notch arranged in the upper edge of the upright side of the holder at the position of the end of the diagonal folding line that is closest to the second end of the weakening. Such a notch preferably connects to the second end of the weakening. A construction is therefore obtained in which it is no longer necessary to tear a part of the (imaginary) side of the folding surface before being able to press in the side provided with the weakening.
As already indicated above, the holder is preferably made of corrugated cardboard, such as the F-flute and G-flute offered by Smurfit Kappa. Preferably, the holder is a pizza box.
In order to make it easier to further reduce the compressed container, ie after pressing both sides and moving the base and top surfaces towards each other, the base surface and / or the top surface parallel to the longitudinal direction of the first side are provided with one or more weakening. Such weakenings preferably comprise a perforation line or crease line. Since tearing of the weakenings during folding is not desirable, if a perforation line is used, a perforation of 6 millimeters to 6 millimeters will be preferred.
In one embodiment the top surface is provided with sides projecting from the top surface with a bottom edge. Such a construction of the upper surface, such as the cover, is nowadays frequently used to effect a robust construction in which the upper surface fits snugly onto the upright sides of the ground surface. The upper edge of the upright sides of the base surface in this case often encloses the top surface, the bottom edge of the sides projecting from the top surface often supporting on the base surface.
In an embodiment according to the present invention, the sides projecting from the top surface which in the closed condition of the container have an overlap with the first and / or second side are provided with corresponding weakenings as already described above for the first and / or second side . Both the first and second side can be compressed without the construction of the top surface with sides projecting relative to the top surface counteracting the depression of the first and second sides.
In another embodiment according to the present invention, the sides projecting from the top surface which, in the closed condition of the container, have an overlap with the first and / or second side are provided with an imaginary square folding surface, which folding surface is enclosed by the top surface, an upstanding edge of the side projecting from the top surface and the bottom edge of the relevant side. The folding surface is herein provided with a diagonal folding line which extends from a first corner point of the folding surface to a second corner point of the folding surface; and the folding surface is positioned such that it is located near the tear line arranged in the first and / or second side. The diagonal folding line arranged in a side projecting from the top surface comprises a perforation line or crease line. Tearing of this diagonal folding line is allowed without the holder thereby losing the functionality of retaining any leftover food scraps. Therefore, if a perforation line is chosen, the perforation may be 2-6 millimeters to 2-6 millimeters.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the holder comprises a ground surface provided with a holding strip for holding the holder in the folded state. Such a retaining strip can for instance be provided with adhesive means, such as an adhesive layer or velcro tape. If the retaining strip is provided with Velcro, the base must also be equipped with a section cooperating with Velcro. Such a section can also consist of Velcro. In a simpler embodiment of the holder according to the present invention, the base surface of the holder comprises an opening for receiving the retaining strip. This opening is preferably situated such that in the folded state of the holder, the retaining strip can easily be folded around the holder and can be received through the opening in the base.
The invention also relates to a blank, or blank, for apparent use in the container according to the present invention.
The invention further relates to a method for folding a foldable form-retaining container according to the present invention, comprising the steps of: a) providing the container according to the present invention; b) exerting an inwardly directed external force with respect to the holder on the first and second side of the holder provided with weakening; c) exerting an external force directed inwards relative to the holder on the upper surface and / or base surface in order to move both surfaces towards each other; and d) optionally, folding the top surface and base surface over a direction parallel to the longitudinal direction of the first side of the container.
Step d) is preferably repeated one or more times in order to further reduce the container and to simplify further processing of the container, such as depositing the container in a waste bin.
The externally exerted force during step b) is preferably chosen such that it at least results in the tearing of the tear line arranged in the first and second side. If the tear line breaks, the force will be sufficient to cause compression of the weakening provided in the first and second sides. After all, tearing of the tear line is already a result of the impression on both sides.
However, although applying a force during step b) is already sufficient upon tearing the tear line, the force may also be selected such that the diagonal fold line arranged in the folding surface, and optionally the tear line arranged in the folding surface, tears.
The invention is described in more detail below with reference to the accompanying figures, in which:
Figures 1A-1C show three results of a holder according to the present invention;
Figure 2 represents a perspective view of the holder according to the present invention; and
3A-3C shows the operation of folding the container according to the present invention.
Figure 1A shows a deflection of a holder 1 according to the present invention. The holder 1, such as a pizza box, is formed by a base surface 2, upright sides 3, 4, 5, 6. The holder 1 also comprises an upper surface 7 which is connected to upright side 4. The upper surface 7 further comprises three relative to sides 8, 9, 10 projecting from the top surface 7. The sides 6, 7 which form the side of the holder 1 are each provided with a weakening 11,12 which is arranged in the longitudinal direction of the relevant side 6, 7. A first end 13,14 connects to a tear line 15, 16 arranged perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the side 6, 7. The second end 17,18 of the weakening 11, 12 connects to a diagonal folding line 19, 20 which is arranged in an imaginary folding surface 21,22. The base surface and the top surface are also provided with a plurality of parallel weakenings 23.
Figure 1B shows a corresponding holder 30. For further information regarding the reference numbers included in Figure 1B, reference is made to the above explanation for Figure 1A. The embodiment as shown in Figure 1B differs in that the second end 17,18 of the weakening 11,12 does not connect to the diagonal folding line 19, 20 arranged in the imaginary square folding surface 21, 22. An additional tear line 24, 25 is arranged on one of the imaginary sides of the folding surface 21,22. The tear line 24, 25 connects the second end 17, 18 with the diagonal folding line 19, 20. To simplify further folding of the holder 30, the projecting sides 8, 10 are also provided with a diagonal folding line 26, 27.
Figure 1C shows a further holder 40 corresponding to the holder 1 of figure 1C and the holder 30 of figure 1B. Holder 40 of figure 1C differs in that it is provided with two notches 41,42 to replace the additional tear lines 24, 25 as shown in figure 1B. In addition, holder 40 comprises a retaining strip 44 which can retain the holder 40 in folded condition by sliding strip 44 into opening 43.
Figure 2 shows a perspective view of the holder 30 according to the present invention. Herein, the upper surface 7 is visible, as well as upstanding front side 3 and upstanding side side 5. Weakening 12 is also visible, the second end 18 of which is connected to a tear line 25 which is subsequently connected to one of the corner points of imaginary square folding surface 22. Tear-off line 25 is positioned such that it connects a corner point of folding surface 22 which also includes the end of diagonal folding line 20.
3A-C shows a method for folding the container 30 according to the present invention. In figure 3A the front side 3 is visible as well as the top surface 7 and side 6. In side side 6 the weakening 11 is shown with a first end 13 and a second end 17. The second end 17 is connected to the diagonal folding line 19, where the first end 13 has already been separated from tear line 15. After both side sides 5, 6 have been pressed in by means of an external force 26. The holder 30 can be pressed down by moving it in the direction of arrows 27. The resulting flattened container 30 can then be folded over weakenings 23 (Figs. 3B-C) in order to obtain a compact container 30 suitable for further processing such as depositing the container 30 in the waste bin (not shown).
